Barbara, I just wanted to thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable read in LUCY IN THE SKY. The irrepressible Lucy was one of the most engaging heroines I've encountered in a work of fiction of any kind in quite a while. To find her in a work of erotica was a great surprise.
Maybe I've chosen badly, but most of the erotica I've read spends little time on character development, world building, humor or plot. With LUCY IN THE SKY, you've done a great job with all of these (AND the sex is hot!). Lucy is a wonderful character, but she's not the only one. The sexy, but confused, Three, the besotted Hyll and the lovable B's of all stripes (ha!) are all finely drawn. And the plot brings them all together in a way that makes sense without being heavy-handed.

I only have one small complaint/suggestion. I bought LUCY as an ebook from Amazon and didn't get that amazing cover. Do you have posters available? I'd pay--lots!

I'm normally very busy reporting Barbara's new releases, rave reviews, and other news, but this interview is going to be a little different. Barbara is going to talk very candidly about her one novel that had less than stellar sales, despite getting some excellent ratings and reviews—POWER OF LOVE. So here's a glimpse into the business side of writing, explained from the author's perspective.

POWER OF LOVE is a Twilight line e-novel released on May 20, 2009 by Ellora’s Cave. It’s about love, loss, and the power of the human spirit to overcome death. Here's the blurb of the novel from the Ellora's Cave website:

Joe is a lost soul.

When Joe is killed in the line of duty, the result of a blunder by his girlfriend Poppy, he ends up stuck between worlds, not quite in heaven, not quite in hell. Heaven is Poppy lying in his arms, hearing the sound of his name on her lips as he makes love to her, again and again. Hell is the knowledge that to save Poppy, he must convince her to let him go.

Poppy is a soul lost.

Joe was Poppy’s heart, her soul, and since he died she’s lost it all, including her sanity. Everywhere she looks, he’s there—talking to her, touching her, sharing ice cream, showers and making love to her like there’s no tomorrow. But tomorrow does come, and letting go of Joe could destroy her.

Sometimes love lasts a lifetime. Sometimes love reaches beyond death. Sometimes…love lasts forever.

L: Barbara, can you tell us what inspired this story of Joe, who's an angel, and Poppy, his girlfriend who grieves him and may have been responsible for his death?

Barbara: I’d wanted to call the book – Letting Go – but that title was already taken. It was the idea of letting go as a theme that started me off on the story – that Poppy couldn’t let go of her dead lover, that she HAD physically let go and let him fall, that Joe couldn’t let go of his feelings and admit what he felt for her. This was one of the few occasions when a title has come to me first. Then I couldn’t use it! But Power of Love works because the story proves how powerful love can be.

L: What about the characters will the readers find interesting or compelling?

Barbara: I do like to create quirky characters and I think despite the subject matter – these two are very funny. The scene where Poppy ends up in a tree and the first scene where Joe discovers he has extra appendages are some of the funniest I’ve written. But these two are also deeply in love, though one of them can’t admit it and I hope I show the depth of the passion between them.

L: Is THE POWER OF LOVE your only novel with an angel as a character?

Barbara: It was but I’ve just added one in my WIP – titled tentatively Remember Me – for Loose-Id but if that title is gone, it will have to have another one.

L: What do you think are the strengths or highlights of the story?

Barbara: The humor in the face of adversity! The sex!

L: Using a point system that reflects sales, POWER OF LOVE only rated about 30 points where some of your other novels scored 300 or more. POWER OF LOVE got great reviews and I know from reading it myself that it's a wonderful story. Were you surprised by this, and why do you think it hasn't sold well?

Barbara: Writers are very coy about their sales figures. I understand that. It would be very depressing to think your sales were good and find out they were less than average but the sales for Power of Love are awful. No beating about the bush. I’ve sold to date around 150 copies. That is staggeringly bad.

WHY? I wish I knew.

Well, I have a few theories but I’d love to hear from readers about this too.

The blurb – is it not enticing? Does it put readers off?
The extract – again – is it off-putting?
The cover – it’s not my favourite but there’s nothing too awful about it.
The subject matter – angel, death – maybe readers think it will be a depressing story – it’s actually one of the funnier ones.

This story was the next one out after I’d been to the Romantic Times convention in Orlando in 2009. I handed out a lot of leaflets about Power of Love – with an extract to read. So I did more for this story than any other I’ve written and the sales were worse. Kind of ironic.

Although I’ve had a couple of reviews for the book, there was less take up than for some of the others. Maybe that made a difference. Yet – one of my best selling books – Susie’s Choice – has only had three reviews.

Basically – I’m baffled.

L: What would you be willing to do to give readers a chance to experience this wonderful story?

Barbara: I’d love to hear from readers who decided NOT to buy this book. If they could tell me why that would be great.

Barbara, I'm really looking forward to the re-release of DOING THE RIGHT THING on January 6th, with FINDING THE RIGHT ONE, the sequel, January 27th. [What a treat! How often does a reader get to read the sequel so soon after the original?] These books present a wonderful continuing story that I know your readers are absolutely going to love. But back to the first book, DOING THE RIGHT THING. I mentioned it's being re-released and has a very different cover. Can you tell us the story on that?

After I had my first acceptances with Ellora’s Cave, I submitted my less-sexy romances for consideration for Cerridwen Press. All three were accepted – ‘Strangers’, ’Digging Deeper’ and ‘Doing the Right Thing’. But sales for CP books aren’t as high as for EC and my editor asked me if I’d consider sexing up all three and letting EC release them.

Easy with ‘Strangers’ – it was already a very sexy story. I decided not to with ‘Digging Deeper’. It didn’t lend itself to altering and the whole gist of the story is that the two main characters never seem to be able to get together. Changing ‘Doing the Right Thing’ was a tricky decision. The story worked fine as it was but I added more to the encounters between Will and Addie and I didn’t feel it detracted from the story. ‘Doing the Right Thing’ had already been issued by CP. I’d even had a couple of good reviews on it but it was pulled after a couple of weeks and now comes out in an improved form. I DO like it better. I think had I been writing with EC in mind when I first penned it, it would probably have been the story it is now.

You took a bit of a chance with DOING THE RIGHT THING and left a character with a very unresolved storyline. Was that your intent from the start, or is that just how the story evolved? Did you find yourself compelled to write FINDING THE RIGHT ONE for the sake of this character?

I knew when I started the story that one guy wouldn’t get the girl. But the first version had a very different ending. On advice of beta-readers, I changed it and let a different guy win out. It was the right thing to do. Ooh a pun!! Either version would have left one character with unresolved issues. I felt sad for the guy who lost out but I didn’t particularly feel I needed to write his story.

Others disagreed. Including my great editor at Ellora’s Cave. So I wrote ‘Finding the Right One’ and I’m glad I did. I feel happier now my characters are happy. And my editor! It was a strange experience writing about a character I’d already created. I had to recall all his foibles and make sure I stayed true to him. As it was, I fell in love with him all over again.

Tell us a little about the heroine in the first book. Where did the idea for her character come from? The opening of the story almost had me falling out of my chair with laughter, I could so relate to the heroine's plight. Do your own personal experiences sometimes find their way into the pages, or do your heroines ever experience similar situations to your own?

Daisy in ‘Perfect Timing’ is my typical heroine. All subsequent ones have a touch of Daisy though I think she was based on Flick – in the very first romance I wrote. I like tall, awkward women. I AM a tall, awkward woman. Yes, my own experiences often find their way into my stories. The start of ‘Finding the Right One’ is almost entirely true. So awful that my editor asked me to tone it down because it made Imo, the heroine, look bad. But yes, I did break a bed, yes, I did scratch a marble floor, yes, I did chase a poor Greek guy with a metal bar (it’s a lamp in the story). I have had a disaster in a tanning booth as in ‘Digging Deeper’. I did brush my father’s ashes off my hands and coat with a disgusted look on my face – oohhh. I nearly drowned in a parasailing accident. I’ve had swimming costumes change size in a pool. Etc etc But all the sex is made up.

Oops, sorry husband of mine, not true of course. He’s my inspiration.

We'll be posting a history of your book release dates and titles soon, but can you tell us in what order you wrote your novels? Was the order they were released quite different from the order of their creation?

I’m working on Remember Me? – title might change if someone already has it – for Loose-ID. It’s a ménage to match ‘The Misfits’. I’m currently about half way through. I don’t plot before I write so that causes me problems down the line. I’m constantly having to write my way out of black holes. BUT I have come up with an idea for a paranormal for Ellora’s Cave which will be my next project.

I caught Barbara Elsborg in a few of her spare moments and asked her to answer some questions about her work, herself, one of the men in her life and some things you may not know from her bio.

Hi, Barbara. Thanks for taking the time out to do this interview. To start off, let me ask this: What's something your readers may not know about you?

I hate shopping for anything – food, clothes etc. I don’t like jewelry. I don’t even wear a wedding ring. I am the most difficult person to buy for in the world which is why my husband once gave me grocery story vouchers for Christmas. Twice actually. Well, that was better than the chain saw or the electric screwdriver of the previous two years. But I am married to a guy who LOVES shopping especially if he can find a bargain.

You've written so many books with wonderful characters. Which are your favorite female and male characters from your books and why?

My favorite is a guy called Charlie – in ‘Strangers’ – which came out with Ellora’s Cave in December. Charlie is a rock star turned actor whose life is out of control. He’s on a downward spiral of drugs, drink and sex. I like him because he’s so damaged but loveable with it. The story is a journey of self-discovery for Charlie and for the heroine. It makes me cry when I read it. It’s the best thing I’ve written.

My favorite heroine is Jo, my werewolf in ‘Falling for you’. I think because she makes me laugh. She was the first alpha female I’d written. I tend to go for the slightly quirky, clumsy women and while Jo is that too, she’s also very courageous.

Now let's turn to the dark side. Who's your favorite villain and why?

I’ve noticed that with each book I write – paranormals in particular – the villains seem to get a bigger and bigger role. I know that not all readers like that. But the one thing about my stories that is important to me is that they aren’t just a series of strung together sex scenes. I want a plot, I want strong character development, I want humor, I want realistic dialogue. That’s what I like to read and what I like to write. Bad guys of course are far more interesting.

I think my favorite very bad guy is Jack- in a story not yet published – a suspense. He kidnaps Kate and takes her on a nightmare cross-country journey, even going so far as to snatch a child and pretend he’s the son Kate thought had died. Jack is evil. He’s the most comprehensive portrait of a villain I’ve attempted but it does make this a rather dark book. It’s called ‘Chosen’ – but it awaits discovery.

Your readers may not be aware that many of your books have connections to others. Can you tell us which books are series or companion books, and how they are related?

‘Perfect Timing’ was my first published book, about Jake who has a pain-in-the-neck brother called Adrian. I felt Adrian needed some closure so I wrote ‘Something About Polly’ which is his story. The two books are stand-alones but it would make sense to read them in order.

I introduced a character called Jax toward the end of ‘Something About Polly’ and he is one of the heroes in ‘Anna in the Middle’. Similarly I have a character called Edward at the end of ‘Anna in the Middle’ who I intended to give his own story – but haven’t yet got around to it! But the connections in these are more for fun than anything else. I did have an email from a reader asking who’d bought Polly the flowers in ‘Something About Polly’ and the answer is in ‘Anna in the Middle.’

But it’s the paranormals for Loose-Id that are connected. I don’t think of them as a series because they all stand alone. There is no requirement to read one to understand another. I prefer to read books that don’t rely on having read others so that’s what I write too.

‘The Consolation Prize’ is the first book that introduces a member of the Trueblood vampire family. Luka is the hero. His brother Alek features in ‘Falling for you’ and their sister Erin is the heroine in ‘Lightning in a Bottle.’ I hinted at the end of that there were other family members and the first is shown in ‘The Misfits’ – Dominic is one of the heroes in this story. I’m currently working on Rhyl’s tale, Dominic’s twin brother, in what I’ve tentatively called ‘Remember Me’. I don’t know if there will be any more. My editor suggested I should wrap up this group of stories with a big reunion

We've talked about your books, now let's talk about you. I guess the standard first question is usually: When did you start writing?

My first real memories of writing were in my teens – when I filled notebooks with fan fiction. I was a TV addict and a movie expert. Now I rarely watch either. I still have the 200 or so stories I wrote. My first serious writing started when I’d left university. I wrote about a girl who was abused by her step-father and ran away to New York only to be snagged by a mafia boss and then seduced by his son. It’s a rip-roaring tale of sex, drugs and violence and lies at the bottom of the closet for when I need a good laugh.

Sometime back, you shared "20 Things About Me" with your co-bloggers on Take it to the Stars. I found it very amusing. (Understatement!) Would you mind if I share the link with your readers?

I understand there's a new man in your life named Winston? Please tell us about your latest love. And do you have a photo you can share?

Ah, Winston Kennedy. He’s not mine. He’s my son’s and his girlfriend’s miniature longhaired dachshund. She’s from LA so the dog has famous British and American names! Son and girlfriend live in a city center apartment where dogs are not allowed so we have Winnie in the week and they sneak him in to their place at the weekend. Winnie sits by my feet as I write. He follows me everywhere – even the loo. He’s a very unusual color for a dachshund – well in the UK anyway. But because he’s so low slung, he gets filthy when I take him for a walk so has to be washed a lot. He likes the shower but not having his teeth cleaned. He’s also picky about what he eats. Arrhhghgh – I’m a dog person.

I told the kids they couldn’t have a dog so the moment my son left home, he bought one and now we get to look after it.

Oh, he's completely adorable, Barbara. (And by the way, I think I recognize that t-shirt in the photo as one that Will was wear in DOING THE RIGHT THING, yes?)

Oooh, well spotted. Yes, that IS the T-shirt out of DTRT!

Some of your peers know you by your nickname, Flick. Where did you acquire that nick?

I called my heroine in ‘Digging Deeper’ by the nickname Flick. Short for Felicity. Digging Deeper, out in January with Cerridwen Press [see earlier announcement], is actually the first romance I ever wrote. Flick is the most trouble-prone character I’ve created. Not like me at all of course. Hmmm. But the tanning booth incident did happen to me though I didn’t laugh at the time.

I joined Critique Circle and needed a nickname and thought I might as well use Flick from the story I needed critiquing and it’s stuck. Partly because I’m too stupid to work out how to change it on my Google account. Still, I like it!
